I took several photos of Dad and his Cousin Roy, who always seemed to
be Dad's favorite cousin. It didn't take long to figure out why because the
two had so much in common, other than the same age and a shared
insistence for wearing overalls and long-sleeve shirts everyday of the year!
When Dad's Mom(Lula) passed away, it was Aunt Ellen (Uncle Lit's
second wife and Roy's Mom) who kept Dad and Homer(Willie's brother)
while Ode(Willie's Father) went court'n for a new wife to take back to
Arkansas(Pearly and Ruby, Dad's sisters, were kept by other family
members). Anyway Dad always seemed to have a number of stories,
especially in regards to Roy and Aunt Ellen.
 We rambled around through
an overgrown cemetery, which is
located at the head of Denton
Holler and where Roy told us that
some family members were
buried. Unfortunately, most of
the markers were native stones
with no legible information. As a
side-note, this is the cemetery
where Major William
Russell,(Russellville, Alabama's
namesake) is buried. His
headstone indicated his
involvement with the
"Mounted Gunmen, Tennessee
Volunteers" in the War of
1812.
TO BE CONTINUED....
On this visit, whatever Dad and I wanted to see or do, Roy made it
happen. As a witness to Roy's friendly nature, on one occasion I climbed to
the roof of his barn to take some 'bird's-eye-view' photos of Denton
Holler and the mountains in the background. Roy could have said, "What's
that fool doin' up on my barn roof?" but, instead, all he said to Dad was
"That boy's a good climber!"
