Part IV
When the sun began to set in the West, Dad would
declare, "Let's head for the wagon yard, for these shoes
are killing me!" That meant time for the final weighing
of the day. Often were the times Dad would light a
match or his cigarette lighter to read the scales to weigh
our cotton sacks, because the sun decided to leave
before we did. After we were weighed out and the final
talley was made, we loaded up in the truck and headed
home for supper and dinner.
After supper the evening chores
were attended to and we would settle down
to watch TV, if it was working. It seems
that the picture was always going out and we
would have to sit and listen to the shows. It
is more likely the reason the Seay kids have
such good imaginations. We had to imagine
what was happening on the TV show, whether
it was a cowboy shoot 'em up, Red Skelton
Show or Arthur Godfrey.

When the time passed by and Dad was ready for bed, he would
admonish, "you kids had better turn that thing off and get to bed.
Five O'clock comes awful early in the morning." Of course, we would
try to stay up as long as we could get away with it, not unlike any
kid would do. Eventually, we would either go on to bed or be told to
"Turn that racket off and get to bed!"
Robert, Danny and Roy usually had to share the same double
bed (which may explain why one of us was afraid we might get
Athletes Foot in our neck). After we went to bed, though, we some-
times would tune in the Cardinals game and drifted off to sleep
while we listened as Tim McCarver tried to beat those "blame
Chicago Cubs." (Don't know when we realized that "blame" wasn't
part of the Chicago Cubs team name.) Then to sleep, ah , just to rest,
for Five o'clock did come awful early in the Morning.
