Wood Carvin' Willie

Ok! Here we go a runnin'! So I'm back to my project, carving a likeness of Grandpaw from wood. I have carved many a things the past few years, but this is the first carving I am trying to make look like a paticular person! So here goes....

First you start with a basswood block and trace a design and cut out with a bandsaw(or coping saws). With this one I found a pre-cut blank that already has Willies stature to it! Now the trick is to get the face right. This rough-out was cut intending to have a hat and beard.

Well, Willie didn't have a beard so a shave is in order and I cut off the hat area in an attempt to give him his full head of hair! The simple rule for this carving is whittle away any part that is not Willie! I'll need to be carefull not to slice of a nose or ear...
You can see the hairline and right ear coming in. Still more to carve off of the face. Once that is done I'll start to carve in the overalls and long sleeve shirt of course. I'm always skeptical of the final project...but when its painted it comes together!
OK! Well I got two ears a goin' and he's starting to shape up....I think! Its turning into a Willie when he was in his 60's! I am trying to get a grin on his face or laugh. Then I need to get his eyeballs on. The chin also needs some work!
Here are two more poses of what I got so far. He is pictured with my Black Bear Santa in red overalls, I carved this feller last weekend. So let me know what you think and check back for updates!

I guess a ball cap would work too... maybe the next one!
